Max Walter Svanberg

Max Walter Svanberg (February 21, 1912 – May 28, 1994) was a Swedish surrealist painter, illustrator, and designer. His most prevalent motifs were of women's bodies merged with elements of flora and fauna.
Born in Malmö, Sweden, Svanberg founded the Swedish artist group Imaginisterna in 1948, but left them soon after. In 1950, he published an album of lithographs. In 1953, he was invited to join a surrealist group in Paris led by André Breton. Svanberg exhibited at the Galerie de l’Etoile Scellee in 1955.  "Max is early in his life inspired by the female body, already as a 10 year old he makes sculptures in wood of women torsos.
Starts to work on technical school in the decoration department in 1929. Starts on Art School in 1931.
Exhibits his first pieces of art in 1935, some flower stilleben, but with a little touch of sureallism. In 1942 he starts the group Minotaur together with a.o. Hulten and Osterlin. In 1945 Jorn visits Malmoe, as he after the war is eager to seek for artists and inspiration after 5 years in the occupied Denmark, he meets Minotaur, and the artists in these circles.
In 1946 Svanberg creates the expression 'Imaginism' and most of the group Minotaur follows this direction.
In 1949 Jorn talks to Imaginisterne about Cobra, and they find that there are a lot of common interests, so Imaginisterne becomes the Swedish branch of Cobra, as Host was the Danish craddle for Cobra.
Svanberg participates in a few exhibitions, but gets after Cobra more and more inspired by the surrealism, which this lithograph shows, he makes a litograph for Cobra nr. 5. shown below.
During the 50's and 60's his pictures get more surrealistic, and very erotic, illustrated among others in the exhibition in Malmoe Kunsthal in the summer of 1979, the catalog is very fine documentation on Svanberg. "( www.cobra.li )

Avant Garde Art John Christoforou

John Christoforou is a French painter born in London to Greek parents in 1921.Il developed in his work, a strong expressionist painting, where black dominates.
The themes developed by the figurative painter are those of the war, births, crucifixions, including scarecrows.(artfinding.com)

 In 1941 he begins four years of active service in the Royal Air Force two years of which in air-sea rescue missions over the Indian Ocean for victims of the war and cyclones. After demobilization, he subsequently devotes his time to painting, while also discovering modern and contemporary art during visits to the principal museums of London.In 1949 Christoforou gets his first solo show in London at the Twenty Brook Street Gallery. He settles in the working class district of Shepherds Bush, where he embarks on a period of intense activity. Due to the figurative elements and expressionist content in his painting from the very beginning, Christoforou stands as an outsider in the art world of the time.

 

 With the return of figuration in painting at the beginning of the 1960’s. Christoforou is recognized as one of the forerunners of the movement known as “New Figuration”. This important period of transition between the abstract art of the 1950’s and the figuration appearing in the early 1960’s, is often overlooked in books of art history. He receives the award of the International Critics Association (ICA), London, and have numerous exhibitions follow in Sweden,  Belgium, and Holland, and in 1966, Galerie Birch presents Christoforou´s  first one-man exhibition in Denmark and with huge success which leads to more in 72-76-80-99.In 1990 Christoforou acquires French nationality. Avant-garde art Roelof Frankot

Roelof Frankot (25 November 1911, in Meppel, Drenthe – 1 December 1984, in Heeten near Raalte) was a Dutch painter. By education he was a photographer, but in 1930, he started painting. He later had a strong relation with the CoBrA movement, and his artworks are quite similar to some of the art from the CoBrA movement. They are very abstract and spontaneous paintings in strong colours. Oil on canvas was his preferred medium. Publications with his art were occasionally accompanied by small poems that he wrote himself. Frankot has been considered an innovator of Dutch art with all its great traditions. Frankot died at the age of 73 from cancer.

CoBrA Art Group Jørgen Nash

Jørgen Nash (March 16, 1920 – May 17, 2004) was a Danish artist, writer and central proponent of Situationism.He was born in Vejrum, Jutland, Denmark, baptized Jørgen Axel Jørgensen, the brother of Asger Jorn. He later changed his family name from Jørgensen to Nash. He was married three times and has six children. His last marriage was with the painter Lis Zwick and would last until his death in 2004. The last 40 years of his life he lived in the artist collective Drakabygget outside Örkelljunga, Sweden.
From 1948 to 1951 he was involved with CoBrA. He went on to join the Situationist International.Wikipedia
